We drove to Dubrovnik – 200 km farther down
the Croatian coast. Leaving Makarska first we had to backtrack to the tunnel
through the Velebit mountain range that separates the seaside from the interior
of the country. A 4 km long tunnel and only a 20 Kuna (3 Euro) charge – the
French and Italians charged 20 Euros for an old 7 km tunnel under Mont Blanc –
Croatia is much more reasonable!
The
freeway drive on the east side of the mountains features rocks – lots and lots
of rocks. The foliage is showing fall colors and was quite pretty! Soon the
road goes back to the coast for the remainder of the trip. 50 to 70 kph is the
speed – the road is too crooked for any higher speeds. The shoreline is a work
of art – real beauty!
Finding our apartment in Dubrovnik was easy – due to Ferda’s cross referencing
between Google Maps and Maps.me the previous night. We managed to drive
directly up in front of the place. After
unpacking we took a walk of a couple of hundred meters to the promenade in
Lapad. There is a very nice green area with paved walks and many large trees
and flowering plants that leads down to the bay. We walked around the area
before setting down for dinner.
